The Cultural Heritage Administration on Oct. 30 said this year¡¯s Visit Korean Heritage Campaign ran from Oct. 31 to Nov. 25 in London to mark the 140th anniversary of official ties between Korea and the U.K.
The event featured content exhibitions and performances depicting Korean cultural heritage under the theme ¡°K-Heritage, A New World.¡±
On Oct. 31, the campaign kicked off at 5:30 p.m. at the opening event ¡°Cultural Heritage Visit Campaign London Reception¡± at the Korean Cultural Center (KCC) in the British capital.
Afterward, the media art exhibition ¡°Here with You -The Beauty of Korean Heritage¡± to run from Nov. 1-25 featured five Korean UNESCO World Heritage Sites―Changdeokgung Palace, Seongsan Ilchulbong Sunrise Peak, Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, Andong Hahoe Folk Village and Bulguksa Temple―at the exhibition hall on the KCC¡¯s first floor.
From Nov. 2 and 3, the KCC on its first floor hosted ¡°Soritgonggam in London,¡± a one-of-a-kind performance with a singer of pansori (narrative lyrical opera) who uses no speakers. This show will also include a performance of taepyeongmu (great peace dance), which was performed by kings and queens to wish for peace and prosperity.
On Nov. 8, ¡°Korea On Stage¡± took place at Wembley Arena, featuring K-pop acts like ATEEZ and P1Harmony and gayageum (12-stringed traditional zither) player Yayeum Yayeum. British singer-songwriter Henry Moodie also performed as a special guest to commemorate the 140th year of bilateral relations.
A media facade in Belgium celebrated the 60th anniversary of relations between Korea and the European Union (EU).
The Korean Cultural Center (KCC) in Brussels on Nov. 13 said it hosted the event from Nov. 16-22 at the Arc de Triomphe monument of Parc Saint-Quintenere in the Belgian capital.
Opened in 1880 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Belgian independence, the park is Europe¡¯s largest architectural and cultural complex space. The KCC said this was the first event of its kind held in front of the Arc de Triomphe, a symbolic monument with the meaning ¡°door to the future.¡±
There, installation artist Ligyung unveiled her latest work, ¡°Embrace of Lights.¡± Employing projection mapping, a cutting-edge technology that projects vibrant light images onto object surfaces, her installation featured the Korean and EU flags along with cultural and historical symbols to produce a dazzling display of colors.
The installation also incorporated content promoting Busan¡¯s bid to host the 2030 World Expo.
¡°I wanted to express new possibilities through the harmony of two concepts: light and sound, Korea and Europe, and the past and future,¡± the artist said. Her works have been exhibited abroad including during the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics in Korea and at the ZKM Center for Art and Media in Germany.
The music in the video to be played at the event stressed unity between Korea and the EU, combining national melodies produced by traditional Korean instruments such as the bak (wooden clapper) and the daebuk (big drum) with Handel¡¯s Passacaglia.
At the opening ceremony on Nov. 16, world-famous soprano Sumi Jo and Belgian countertenor Dominique Corbiau sang about the past, present and future of Korea and the EU.
From Nov. 16-22, the media facade opened to the public every evening from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
