Folk Paintings Display Held to Wish
for Asian Games¡¯ Success

An exhibition opened in Shanghai, China, to wish for the successful hosting of the recently concluded Asian Games in Hangzhou.
The Korean Cultural Center (KCC) in Shanghai on Sept. 11 announced that it held from Sept. 14 to Nov. 4 ¡°Harmony: Exhibition on Exchanges of Korean and Chinese Folk Paintings to Wish for Successful Hosting of Hangzhou¡¯s Asian Games¡± at the exhibition space on the KCC building¡¯s third floor.
Held under the themes of ¡°friendship,¡± ¡°harmony,¡± and ¡°success¡± of both countries, the display was designed to stimulate bilateral cultural exchange and promotion Korean culture to the locals.
The event¡¯s 68 folk paintings, comprising 25 from Korea, 17 from Hangzhou, including those of farmers and others that decorated tombs, cliffs and other buildings during the Han Dynasty and 26 wooden engravings from Suzhou depicted the lifestyles, customs, regional characteristics, cultures and traditions of the people of the two nations.
The event also featured interactive events on Korean culture. A workshop on making samsaekjeon (tricolored pancakes) was slated for Sept. 14-16, as well as the interactive zone Korean Plays: Hanmadang, where visitors could play traditional games such as yunnori (traditional board game), tuho (pitch pot) and jegichagi (kicking a shuttlecock).
¡°Through the various interactive programs prepared at the KCC, we want to offer an opportunity to make the appeal of Korean cultural content more widely known throughout China,¡± the KCC said.

KCC in Belgium Hosts Interactive Event
on Milky Rice Wine

An event in Brussels has had locals make and taste Korea¡¯s milky rice wine makgeolli.
The Korean Cultural Center in the Belgian capital on Sept. 25 said around 30 people attended the program on making and tasting makgeolli.
The participants listened to explanations of makgeolli by expert Yun Na-ra as they kneaded dough with nuruk (fermentation starter) in it and made the wine.
¡°Anywhere in the world, you can make traditional makgeolli by making nuruk with a region¡¯s wheat or barley and adding rice and water to it,¡± Yoon said. She also explained the process of making makgeolli starting with the principles of basic fermentation techniques.
¡°I first drank makgeolli while visiting Korea last year and still enjoy it after returning to Belgium,¡± participant Martine said. ¡°I¡¯m now glad that I can directly make it.¡±
Another participant Joanne said, ¡°When I think of makgeolli, I remember happy moments,¡± adding, ¡°I look forward to enjoying the makgeolli I make with friends.¡±
The day before, the KCC held an event comparing the processes of making Korean and Belgian traditional alcoholic beverages and explained the makgeolli making process to brewing representatives there.
