In the past, fishing and whaling were key industries in Ulsan¡¯s port district of Jangsaengpo. Naturally, there were many freezer warehouses used for storing seafood. Sechang Warehouse was one such freezer warehouse. However, it fell into disuse as the fishing industry declined. Then, on June 26, 2021, Sechang Warehouse reopened as Jangsaengpo Cultural Warehouse, an arts complex people can visit whenever they wish.
Jangsaengpo Cultural Warehouse looks like any other warehouse. Only the whale painted on the side of the colorless building sets it apart. However, as soon as you open the door and enter Jangsaengpo Cultural Warehouse, you¡¯re awed by the scenery you see before you.
Through several years of remodeling, the interior of the warehouse is a spartan utilitarian space no longer. Exhibition rooms, experience spaces, mini theaters, practice spaces, meeting rooms and book cafes are located on the first to sixth floors. The freezer doors and the old stairs are the only things left to remind us that this place was once a warehouse.
Jangsaengpo Cultural Warehouse hosts cultural programs on each floor. In the mini-theater on the sixth floor, musical performances such as ¡°The Painters: Hero¡± and ¡°Chef¡± take to the stage. The exhibition room located on the third and fourth floors host a variety of exhibitions, including the Korea-Singapore International Exchange Project ¡°Cyborg Thinks¡± and world-renowned photographer Schinster¡¯s photo exhibition.
The Citizen¡¯s Creativity Plaza on the fourth floor has various whale-related exhibits such as murals, bone models and interactive media art. The room located on the fourth floor, with numerous lights that change color every moment, is a popular place for children to have fun and adults to take chromatically vibrant photos.
On the ¡°Starlight Yard¡± rooftop, there is a permanent art program in which anyone can participate. Children who visit Jangsaengpo Cultural Warehouse can enjoy painting and crafts with the help of a professional art instructor.
For those who visited the predecessor, Sechang Warehouse, the sea was both a workplace and a fierce struggle. However, for those who visit Jangsaengpo Cultural Warehouse, the sea is a place of rest. The ocean view that can be enjoyed through the window on any floor is the pride of the facility. Located on the sixth floor, Jigwan Book Cafe is one of the most popular places in the complex as you can look down on Jangsaengpo at a glance and immerse yourself in contemplation with a book.
In particular, the sunset at Jangsaengpo Cultural Warehouse is so beautiful that it was selected as one of the nine most scenic spots in the district. The beautiful scenery, with the crimson sky and ocean, harmonizes with Jangsaengpo Cultural Warehouse¡¯s window frames, as if you were looking at a painting. Every day at sunset, the lobby on the sixth floor is crowded with people attempting to capture this scenery.
Residents selected Jangsaengpo Cultural Warehouse as the local district¡¯s best policy in 2021. It is so highly regarded because it helps rectify the area¡¯s previous lack of cultural facilities.
Jangsaengpo Cultural Warehouse has become a new living space for locals and visitors alike, reminding everyone that rest is just as important as work.
