ASCENDING BARWANGSAN MOUNTAIN BLANKETED WITH SNOW

Upon arriving in Pyeongchang, head straight to Barwangsan Mountain. Standing at 1,458 meters, it¡¯s the 12th highest mountain in Korea. The mountain is especially beautiful in winter when visitors can witness both the snow-covered landscape and sanggodae from its summit. Sanggodae refers to frost flowers?white ice crystals that form on tree branches when moisture in the air freezes. These typically appear when temperatures drop below -6¡Æ Celsius with humidity above 90% and are most commonly found on high mountains with significant temperature variations. The combined sight of accumulated snow and frost flowers creates a dazzling white spectacle.

While it¡¯s possible to hike to the summit, taking the cable car is recommended due to cold weather and potentially slippery mountain paths. The ¡°Mona Yongpyong¡± cable car station is a 20-minute taxi ride from KTX Jinbu Station. After purchasing tickets at the second-floor ticket office, board the cable car for the 7.4-kilometer round trip. Through the transparent windows, you¡¯ll first see the smooth white slopes of the ski resort, followed by a panoramic view of the snow-covered forest. The 18-minute journey to the summit is a mesmerizing experience through a silent winter wonderland.

Once the cable car reaches Barwangsan Mountain¡¯s summit, head to the fourth floor to visit the ¡°Gi Skywalk,¡± known as Korea¡¯s highest observation deck. Standing on this tall, extended skywalk, you¡¯ll feel the strong winds and a thrilling sense of floating in air. Take a deep breath and walk slowly forward to take in the view of snow-wrapped Barwangsan Mountain and Korea¡¯s majestic mountain ranges. To the northeast lie Seonjaryeong Mountain and Hwangbyeongsan Mountain, to the west is Odaesan Mountain and to the southwest is Gariwangsan Mountain. The name Barwangsan means ¡°mountain with the energy of a king,¡± and indeed, you can feel the mountain¡¯s pure, profound energy.

Below the skywalk lies the ¡°Millennium Yew Forest Trail,¡± home to ancient yew trees up to 1,800 years old. Korean mountaineers consider trees that have lived for over a thousand years to be sacred, believing they pray for the safety of mountain visitors. Frost flowers adorn every branch of these ancient trees that have stood firm through centuries of wind and snow. Up close, these crystalline formations appear even more mystical than expected, like winter¡¯s own breath. Walking along the winding path through this white landscape, visitors find themselves praying for the well-being of their loved ones.

HEARTY FOODS TO WARM THE SOUL

When the cold starts to seep in, thoughts turn to warm, comforting food. A natural choice is gamjaongsimi (potato ball soup), one of Gangwon-do Province¡¯s signature dishes. The region is famous for its delicious potatoes, thanks to its mountainous terrain and cool climate. To make gamjaongsimi, finely ground potatoes are shaped into small, round balls about the size of bird eggs and cooked in a warming anchovy broth.

Spooning up the gamjaongsimi, you¡¯re greeted with the rich, clean taste of the broth and the chewy texture of the potato balls. It feels like comfort food made with care, wrapping you in warmth. During the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, this dish became a favorite among international athletes?it¡¯s easy to understand why.

  • img1Gamjajeon (potato pancake) and gamjaongsimi (potato ball soup) made with Pyeongchang potatoes
  • img1Clusters of hwangtae (dried pollack) covered in snow / ¨Ï TongRo Images Inc.

Hwangtaegui (grilled dried pollack) is another iconic Gangwon-do Province dish. Pollack becomes hwangtae through a process of repeated freezing and thawing in the cold weather, turning yellow as it dries. To prepare hwangtaegui, the dried fish is cleaned, grilled once, then brushed with gochujang (red chili paste) seasoning and grilled again on both sides. One serving of this sweet and spicy dish, crispy outside and tender inside, is enough to chase away the winter chill.

The memories of this journey linger long after. A winter trip to Pyeongchang in Gangwon-do Province, surrounded by white snow, might remain in memory as a time when the fierce cold, paradoxically, brought warmth to the heart.
