What does the word ¡°photography¡± mean to you? For the younger generation in Korea, photography is a means of expressing themselves through play. That¡¯s why Koreans go to special places and invest a lot of time and effort into taking great photographs. Koreans are incredibly serious when it comes to photography.

Photopress Generation

The ¡°photopress generation¡± refers to the trend-leading younger generation in Korea. ¡°Photopress¡± is a compound word of ¡°photo¡± and ¡°express.¡± The photopress generation is a group of people who have no hesitation in expressing themselves through photos. People have enjoyed taking photos for a long time, so why was the word ¡°photopress¡± only recently coined? It¡¯s because many people in Korea not only enjoy taking photos, but also actively use photography as a medium to brand themselves.

Taking photos has become a culture and trend in Korea. It is common to look for photo spots at travel destinations or stand in long lines at pop-up stores to take photos. A recent trend has been to meet up with friends and take pictures together through instant photo booths. It has also become common to visit professional photo studios to shoot a concept that maximizes one¡¯s charm rather than taking photos that capture one¡¯s identity.

Why has the photopress generation become so passionate about photography? Young Koreans, especially those in their mid-twenties or younger, have been adept at using digital devices and digital recording since they were young. For them, photography is one of the easiest ways to capture moments. The younger generation is also highly exposed to products and services tailored to the individual. This is one of the reasons they have no hesitation when it comes to consuming products that fit them and allow them to express themselves properly.

This isn¡¯t the only reason. Young people in Korea also value the experience they gain. They are willing to go through the process of achieving a certain goal, even if it¡¯s arduous because they find joy in the experience. Likewise, they think that, while long, the process of visiting a photo studio to take a beautiful photo is meaningful in itself. The current photography culture in Korea was created by the preferences of the younger generation, who find photography to be one of the most accessible and familiar mediums for recording.

Korea¡¯s Unique Photo Culture

Let¡¯s take a look at the things that make up Korea¡¯s unique photography culture. First, there¡¯s the photo booth. Korean photo booths have numerous charms. Special cameras are mounted on the ground or ceiling. The studio¡¯s concepts are also various, such as subways, airplane restrooms and elevators, to allow people to take dynamic photos. These booths offer endless types of photo frames including event frames in collaboration with specific characters, celebrities, and companies. QR codes are also printed on the photos that can be read by a smartphone so you can download a video of the photo being taken as well as the photo file. Some people deliberately search for photo booths with the concept they want, which has led to a culture of visiting various photo booths to experience the different options.

Professional photo studios have also had a great influence in creating the unique photography culture in Korea. Professional photo studios in Korea have developed further and sparked a personalized photo culture by providing services that change things like the background color to match the individual¡¯s image when taking identification photos. There are also places that have stock sets and costumes for various concepts such as fairy tales, seasons and Christmas. Professional photo studios have become places where people can maximize their charms to make their introduction photos special. As such, the number of people getting professional photos of themselves without any special purpose has increased significantly.

This phenomenon may lead people to think that Koreans are overly absorbed with doing all of this to take a single photo. However, their opinion may change if they take advantage of the photo booths and photography culture that have spread to Korea, even just for a moment. It will help them understand the younger generation and see how they fully enjoy the process, results and means of effectively expressing themselves.
