Often, villas represent more than just a desire to kick back in pleasant surroundings. Some villas are physical manifestations of wealth and power, secret palaces of their own hidden deep in the hills or forests, far from prying eyes.
In this issue, we visit two former such villas. In the hills of Seoul, the historic Seokpajeong―once a favorite retreat of late Joseon¡¯s most powerful regent―is now part of one of the capital¡¯s top art museums. Meanwhile, in central Korea, the former presidential retreat of Cheongnamdae is now a public leisure space open to all.
Also in this issue, we talk with pioneering dancer Ahn Eun-me, look at the hit television series ¡°Pachinko,¡± enjoy a bit of fried chicken and beer, and more.
