Located near Seodaemun Prison History Hall, Dongnimmun Gate was constructed to commemorate Korea¡¯s long-standing desire for freedom and independence. It was originally built to commemorate the end of the Qing Dynasty¡¯s interference in the Joseon Dynasty¡¯s domestic affairs. During the Japanese colonial period, it became a symbol of the desire for independence. Now that Korea is independent, Dongnimmun Gate symbolizes the Korean people¡¯s determination to preserve the country¡¯s hard-won freedom.
