30th Anniversary of German Reunification

Berlin, Germany

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of German reunification, the KCC in Berlin on Oct. 3 hosted an event at Potsdam Square coinciding with National Foundation Day of Korea. Held under the theme ¡°Peace - Toward Unification,¡± the five-hour afternoon ceremony featured traditional Korean music with instruments like the gayageum, (Korean zither), as well as minyo (traditional Korean folk music) and fusion gugak (traditional Korean music).

Traditional Korean dance was also presented like the Buddhist dance seungmu atop Tongiljeong Pavilion, a traditional Korean gazebo made of stone and wood at Potsdam Square. The pavilion was opened in November 2015 to symbolize the global wish for Korean reunification.

Other interactive activities at the event included those featuring calligraphy and Korean handwriting. As the first of the KCC's offline events since the pandemic¡¯s outbreak, measures were taken to ensure disinfection and proper social distancing.

Surprise Gift from First Lady

Written & photographed by Honorary Reporter•  Rae Catherine Roldan from Philippines

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the world the many facets of Korea¡¯s innovation through its high-powered technology. Korea.net Honorary Reporters have written articles on how the country has contained the spread of the coronavirus.

In May this year, I wrote an article about how Korea mass-produced COVID-19 test kits using artificial intelligence. While writing, I was amazed by how the country used one of its greatest strengths, technology, to fight the pandemic. I was one of the few lucky Honorary Reporters whose articles were read by first lady Kim Jung-sook. I was even more thrilled to learn that I would receive a package from Cheong Wa Dae containing gifts from her and President Moon Jae-in. I was expecting nothing in return for the article since I had joined the program in March. The following are the gifts I received in the package.

Letter of appreciation from first lady

The first lady wrote to Honorary Reporters thanking them for their words of comfort. She wished good health and continued solidarity among the people, and said she looked forward to more articles later.

100 selected speeches by President Moon

Two books I received contained 100 selected speeches by Pres. Moon in Korean and English, from his opening comments made in Jan. last year at his New Year¡¯s news conference to his keynote speech given at the 74th United Nations General Assembly in Sept. this year. This work will surely enrich my knowledge about Korea, its core policies and vibrant culture.

Appointment certificate for Honorary Reporters

This certificate with my name and appointment date inscribed came in a blue velvet holder with the emblem of the Korean Culture and Information Service. The item gave me a sense of pride and purpose to continue my passion and symbolized my commitment to producing notable articles and content for the program.

Pin badge

This small badge has the official Honorary Reporter logo, perfect for carrying wherever I go. I will wear this badge as a reminder of who I am and where I belong — the Korea.net Honorary Reporter family.
